At the end of March, Rinka Hirayama was on vacation with her family near the Grand Canyon. While traveling the family's rental car was hit by an oncoming pickup truck that had crossed over into their lane. Rinka's father Tomohiro, mother Sachiyo, and brother Yuki were all killed, along with the two people in the truck that hit them. At the time, the truck had reportedly been traveling at 100 miles per hour while being chased by Navajo Nation police.

With no family in the US, Rinka's grandparents have flown from Japan to Phoenix where she is recovering. Yashakawa Electric, the company that Rinka's father worked for has established a fund to help provide for Rinka's recovery.
